While both China and Taiwan consider Mandarin their first language, the countries have separate dialects. People who learn the language at a young age usually speak it more naturally. Even if you do not know that you will ever need to use the language, there is a chance that your children will and if you have already learned to speak Mandarin, you will have an easier time convincing your children that the language training is important.
